This year marks the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to the mainland, and the shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has led to a major review of the security of VIPs.
Queen Elizabeth dies and King Charles takes the throne.
Looking back on the past year, please tell us about an event that left an impression on you.
(Prince Akishino)
I think a lot has happened in the past year.
For example, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, conflicts and civil wars in various places, and abnormal weather.
After that, I think that many precious lives were lost due to big accidents and incidents, and people’s lives were threatened.
Among them, abnormal weather that is thought to be caused by climate change, such as floods, droughts, and heat waves.
Then there are various things such as forest fires, but I am very concerned about this climate change.
And this will have a big impact on the ecosystem, and I think it will also have a big impact on our lives, such as food shortages.
And while this climate change is of course global in scale, this is stated in the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in which human activity also accounts for a very large amount of weight. However, I feel that it is necessary for individuals to turn their attention to this issue.
Regarding the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, I believe that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth went through many hardships during her 70-year reign.
But was that your 21st birthday?
In his speech at that time, he said, “I will dedicate my life to all of you.”
After his passing, so many people came to visit him at Westminster Hall, and I felt that he was once again trusted by the people.
I think I have met him in 1989 and 1990 since his visit to Japan.
Also, the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japan is one of the things that has left an impression on me over the past year.
Okinawa returned to Japan in May 1972. At that time, I was in the first grade of elementary school.
I think it was on the same day that the ceremony was held, but I’m not sure. The principal is called the head of the department, and at that time, the teacher said that Okinawa had returned to school today, which left a deep impression on me.
50 years later, it still makes a strong impression on me.
It is also said that in the last 50 years, a very large number of people died during the war, one out of every four people in the prefecture. After that, various exhibitions and entertainment performances were held, and I think it was an opportunity to learn about Okinawan culture and art.
Other than that, I think that people’s image of COVID-19 infection has changed considerably since the Delta strain and then the Omicron strain.
When I myself talk with medical professionals in the field, I often hear that they feel that it is a completely different disease.
Also, restrictions on movement have been greatly eased, and people from overseas are now visiting Japan.
Under such circumstances, I myself am very glad that the tourist spots have regained their liveliness. I am very happy, but on the other hand, the situation of medical facilities and hospitals when the number of infected people is increasing, and if the number of hospitalized patients increases, it will be a big problem. Recently, I feel that it is quite difficult to find a good balance in that area.
In relation to COVID-19, common infectious diseases between humans and animals are quite common among infectious diseases, but it is not only this one infectious disease, but also infectious diseases between humans. I also get the impression that the concept of one health, which is often referred to as one health, is spreading little by little.
Lastly, I would like to say that this April, I was able to complete my visit to the Jingu Shrine related to the Ceremony of the Crown Prince, and then the visit to the mountain tombs. I am relieved that
Most of it has been about this year.
